A Great Vent In The Music Department

Crystal’s 5 Star Track List Of All Time

Mary Jane- Alanis Morissette
Man, I don’t really believe this song needs an explanation but since I love it so entirely I want to write about it anyway.  This song has gotten me through a lot of heart ache and trials.  I have been her many times.  If I am feeling torn and broken this is the song I always turn to and I always cry through it but in the end I feel clarity.  Its incredibly sufficient.

You Don’t See Me- Josie & The Pussycats
Don’t laugh.  I know you think there is no way that one of the best songs of all time can be done by Josie & The Pussycats but surprisingly, yes.  One thing I love about music is its capability to capture our feelings and thoughts and portray them in word when we cant.  This song goes out to all girls that have fell head over heels for their awesome best friends that simply cant see who we are, right in front of them.  Falling for my best friends should be my calling card. haha

Age Of Consent- New Order
Basically the best indie/alternative song to grace this planet.  And its from the 80’s.  No surprise there. Haha.  This song is pretty much mellow through its entirety yet its clever melodies and play on words suck you in.

Not That Girl- Idina Menzel (Wicked)
So, here again, may not be to everyone’s fancy although I will say with complete confidence that Wicked is the best musical ever.  However, it goes out to every girl that has been the second choice girl to a guy or at least felt that way.  Which I am pretty sure that every girl has felt this way at least once and if you have not you are vain and need to get over yourself. lol

Crazy- Patsy Cline
Patsy Cline is genius.  Nuff Said.

Lullaby- Shawn Mullins
Even though this song is written about a girl in Los Angeles, I almost feel like anyone could relate to this song at least once in their life.  I know I have.  Plus this song is mostly spoken and not sung which definitely catches your attention and grabs you to listen to him singing a clear visual of how pain sits and stirs, then boils over.

Lightening Crashes- Live
This song has such power.  I mean is there any other song you feel this huge energy and power of life and death in the same song?

Sunrise- Yeasayer
Now this song is another song that I would describe of the indie persuasion with a hint of African?  And I am pretty sure its not at all well known however, its quality of lyrics and drums is definitely worth favor.  Look up the lyrics to this song.  If you don’t feel a sense of power and curiosity, liberty even, then check your pulse.  Haha

Love Song- Breakfast Club Soundtrack
Now I had to put an instrumental song on my list.  And this is definitely the winner.  I mean I seriously had to search high and low for this song several years ago.  It is perfection.

Do It To Me- Usher
So, I would not like to offend anyone but I also have to be real and put all songs that are true to this rating.  This is one of them.  One day, when you are married you will understand, if you don’t already.  Until then, if easily offended, wait.  K, thanks.

Breathe- Anna Nalick
Her lyrics are raw and authentic, personal and evolving, naked and cradling.  That’s all I have to say on that.

Getting Into You- Relient K
Relient K pretty much hit the nail on the head with this one.  How does it feel and what does it mean to devote yourself to God and your relationship with Him?  This song.

She’s Like The Wind- Patrick Swayze
So, I cant really explain to you why this song is as good as it is.  Especially since its not really directed girl to guy but it doesn’t really seem like it matters because its still capturing.

Come Downstairs and Say Hello- Guster
For a while, I almost forgot about this song and its completely amazing-ness.  The Lyrics.  The Instrumentals. The Everything.

Both Hands- Ani Difranco
I was introduced to this song by my good friend “Lala”.  Her voice alone is intriguing but the constant stop and go of this melody is thriving and I almost think you could take these lyrics in as many ways as you want although the picture Lala “painted” for me will probably never leave.  Haha I still love this song.

Never Ever- All Saints
Yeah, it would be incredibly personal and revealing if I were to explain the impact of this song on me but its simply a great song.

Lemonade- Chris Rice
Is it possible to be addicted and completely enjoy a song only for its first 25 seconds?  Not to say that the rest of the song isn’t enjoyable because it is.  Just not half as satisfying as the first 25 seconds.  It makes me smile and that is definitely sufficient.
No One Like You- Barlow Girl
Despite the obvious great lyrics and catchiness, I adore this song for its drum music.  Saw this girl play it in concert, never the same.

Never Let Go- Matt Redman
So I will admit that I am particular to this song because God showed it to me when I needed it, however, everyone needs it.

Mr. Roboto- STYX
This is the all time party song if you ask me.  You cant have a bad time when this song is playing.  Just let loose and dance!  Plus you cant go wrong with STYX, I mean HONESTLY!

I am not ashamed to say that I am a huge fan of Cher.  Definitely, if I could only listen to 5 musicians for the rest of my life, you bet she would be on that list.  Therefore it is too hard to pick a favorite so I have to settle on saying that Taxi, Taxi and Love is the Groove are simply amazing; the lyrics are mind blowing.

Black or White- Michael Jackson
Again it was an obvious difficulty to pick one song by Michael because as a musician he is pure genius- the rest doesn’t matter and I don’t feel like debating with you.  However black or white is and will always be my favorite of his.  I have loved this song for at least 19 years which is hard to believe seeing as though I am only 22 but I can seriously remember the first time I heard this song at age 3, at a dance recital.  I have adored it ever since.  Beat that.

Send Me On My Way- Rusted Root
Everyone has heard this song just doesn’t know it by name.  This is my ultimate cheer-me-up song!  Its self explainable as to why!

Hot Blooded- Foreigner
Again this is a song that you might need to get married to understand.  So because of this case, I cant explain. J

Dancing in the Moonlight- King Harvest
This is that song that you cant resist old school dancing to whether you hear it with your girls (if you are a girl that is) or if you are with that someone special.  It is joy to be shared, for sure.

I Wont Leave You Lonely- Shania Twain
I don’t have many country songs that would make this list but thinking about it, this song I do come back to repeatedly.  Its just romantic and beautiful and combines three languages which because of my language loving nature is completely hot.

Finish Line- Snow Patrol
The melody and lyrics of this song immediately grabbed me.  I am not sure if it will stand the test of time forever as one of the best songs to me but so far as long as I have been introduced, it has.

Fast Cars and Freedom- Rascal Flatts
Yeah, I have not known of this song for long, this is true.  BUT, I cant get this song out of head thanks to Josh and Kalista, and I think I will always have an attachment to it.  Memories made.

Chain Gang- Sam Cooke
I will admit that its weird that this is most definitely one of my favorite songs because the of the lyrics but I guess I just love Sam Cooke’s voice and I especially love it in this song.  (I have loved this song since I was ten haha)

Without Love- Hairspray
This is just a really fun, catchy song that I’ve played more times than I can count so I feel like it cannot be denied of its vote.

Faerie Dance- Plants and Animals
This song is mostly instrumental with some singing, however done by an indie artist.  This song takes you on an adventure.  You literally are dreaming through this song and you discover.  Discover yourself, your surroundings, your emotions are taken on a trip and its unpredictable.  A song does all this.  Hot? Yes.
P.S. it’s a seven minute song.  Prepare yourself to be blown away.

The Sunscreen Song- Baz Luhrman
I don’t know how many times I have written about this song, but at this point I will simply say “Haven’t heard it?  Do it.  Openly.”

The entire Labyrinth Soundtrack.  I really can’t narrow it down to one and if I did, it would probably ruin it.  Even the instrumentals!

If I had to pick two Disney songs that would beat out the rest (as difficult as that is to do) I would most certainly choose Kiss The Girl - The Little Mermaid first and foremost and secondly He Lives In You- Lion King.  These songs are incredible, amazing works!

God’s Will- Martina Mcbride
Every time I hear this song, I cry.  I mean, wow.

Ode To My Family- The Cranberries
I really have a very diverse range of music that I enjoy.  This song is so raw, so genuine, so complicated.  Life is complicated.

Addicted- Simple Plan
You know those songs that just draw everyone in when you hear it and it just makes you smile?  This is one of those songs.  You cant help but sing along and probably laugh at the same time.

Always Be My Baby- Mariah Carey
This is definitely my favorite out of all Mariah’s songs and it has been since I was ten.  I remember where I was and what I was doing and who I was the first time I heard this song.  And its not really like this song is super profound or unique.  Its just youthful and relaxing and reminiscing in it calms me.

Girlfriend- Avril Lavigne
Hahahah!  Yes, this does make the list for me but probably mostly because of the memories that are held with this song.  I mean honestly you wouldn’t think a pop punk song like this would have such impact but it really did and I miss the times that reflect this song for me.  It is clever lyrics and music though.

I cant really pick out a Wyclef Jean song that beats the rest but I need to give this man props because his music really is fantastic.

The Way I Are- Timbaland
I know you probably don’t think this is of much quality, however I do love this song.  Dancing to this song is my favorite and his break down in the middle is awesome!

The Boys of the Summer- The Ataris
The lyrics is this song win completely.  One line always sticks out to me “A little voice Inside my head said, "Don't look back. You can never look back."

Purple Rain- Prince
Purple Rain! Can I just say that this song is ridiculously amazing?  I mean not to mention Prince is obviously talented at guitar but the lyrics, the movement, the feeling generated is outstanding!

Bad- U2
This song has amazing emotional progression.  The words are inviting and then solidifying.  It’s a six minute song but so worth it.  I am by far a huge fan of U2, especially their 80’s stuff but this has always been my #1 choice song of theirs’.  Music that stirs you up.
Just A Lil Bit- 50 Cent
Again, those you get offended easily- you know the drill and please don’t judge me.  This song has memory for better or worse and therefore will always be there.  Work It -Missy Elliot is of the same condition and situation.  Again- no judging please.

Im tired and although it seems like I have named too many this really is only the first installment.  There are just so many great songs that have impacted me one way or another.  If you enjoyed this let me know, and be looking for the next installment!
So I really stinkin hate goodbyes.  I mean honestly.  Especially when you know you wont really see that person again, atleast not very many times and far and few at that.  You know, not unless some odd unexpected turn in life occurs which really how often does that happen?

I feel like people come into our lives and leave again so quickly, so often.  And I guess thats part of life.  And maybe it has to do with my age and the state in which I live as a college student.  But it hurts no less.  Sometimes I wonder if one day, later in the circle of life, that it will begin to not hurt as much because you had became used to the idea and cycle.  And maybe it depends on the person.  Although I really dont put much worth into astrology, I do think that me being a pisces isnt so far fetched.  I am by nature an emotional person when it comes to all the right things.  I care deeply about people usually even despite how well I actually know them.

Thats why I think goodbyes are so hard for me.  Especially since in the last 5 years of my life Ive had to say hello and goodbye to so many.  Some that I deeply cared for, some I had some connection with and shared life on some level, and some I barely knew.  No matter the range of closeness, I do always feel that twinge of pain, as some one exits my circle of life (even if its only for a period of time, but worse if its pretty much forever).  If  you were really close to me, its like you take a part of my heart with you when you leave.  I guess I thank God that He made me this kind of person, the kind that remembers.  Remembers who you were, who you are, who I think you will be (which generally I am completely optimistic and my inner being forces me to see the best or the greatest potential in everyone- its a gift and a curse) and those sheer moments of life shared whether creating tears of joy and laughter or tears of pain.  I'm the kind of person who will remember you and if we meet again my heart will smile, again, no matter how well I knew you.

I think its quite ironic that at this exact moment "With or Without You" by U2 just came on the radio.

I Love The Unknown- Clem Snide

Although I am sure that most do not know this about me, but I LOVE indie music.  Offbeat indie music.  I watched a movie last week, Rocket Science, undoubtedly an indie film, that enabled this song to come into my life.  It was kind of the theme throughout this movie and most noticibly the end.
Here are the lyrics:

she asked him,
"why can we not be together
why is it we have to part
why did you leave with a stranger
when i am revealing my heart?"

because i love the unknown
i love the unknown
he says he loves the unknown
because i love the unknown
i love the unknown
he says he loves the unknown

they asked him,
"hey, where's this bus going?"
and he said, "well, i'm really not sure."
"well then, how will you know where to get off?"
and he said, "the place with the most allure."

because i love the unknown
i love the unknown
he says he loves the unknown
'cause i love the unknown
'cause i love the unknown
he said he loves the unknown

and then his father got him a job
and it paid well
but every day it felt the same
well, his father was really heartbroken
when he quit and changed his last name

the doctor asked him what he was afraid of
just what was he running from?
he said, "it's not a fear of success, nor of closeness
but of going through life feeling numb."

that's why i love the unknown
i love the unknown
he said he loves the unknown

The reason that some of the verses are surrounded with quotations is because the verses really do sound like conversations in the song and are practically spoken, not sung.  This does not at all make the song monotone sounding though, it simply adds to the "allure" of the song.  It could definately be described as catchy, which I am sure was atleast 90 percent of the point of this song being created.  It forces you to quickly catch on to the chorus and sing right along with it.  And the message is clear, although by far, I cannot say I love the unknown even though I would like to.  As Christians, we hate the unknown even though its quite clear that God does and would like His believers to as well.  I mean loving the unknown is pretty much just like having strong faith.  They are one and the same, I think.  My friend Thomas helped me to realize this not too long ago.  What kind of faith would we have if we always knew actually what was going to occur and what God wanted for us was perfectly clear?  Would that not be incredibly easy?  We would never have to take any sort of leap of faith in God.  No, instead God making things unknown to His creation means we have to ride in God's car with His hands on the steering wheel, not ours.  We must feel insufficient and uncomfortable in order to grow our faith.  I am realizing this more and more everyday.  Making decisions for the future might be the most difficult tests of faith.  Jessica Hammersley told me something the other day that stuck with me.  We think that God has only one option He wants for us and we have to make sure we pick the right one or life will crumble.  But really, God lays many different choices out for us and unless they obviously would be the wrong choice (ie sin related) picking one over the other doesnt mean the others are bad it just means it will take us onto a different path maybe than the others but its still within God's "big picture" for our lives.  I am trying to take reassurance in knowing that in making the "big" decisions of my life.  It reassures me that God lays these plans down for me letting me choose which one and as long as I am seeking Him and His truth, it will be an exciting, challenging, joyful, tearful, rewarding adventure!  I am trying to love the unknown!

I started this journal for one reason and one reason only. Music. Music and my love for it. Love for it in every way. The way it reaches into the very fibers of my being and energizes, empowers, and liberates me. It makes my heart and soul happy. Obviously this happiness is initially derived from God, the one who gave us music in all it's beauty and I will give the praise to Him. Music really is like nothing else on this earth and I like all different types of music for its melodies, intricacies, right down to the very lyrics of the song. God has enabled musicians to put together such complex, miracles known as songs and I am so inspired, even as a musician of some sort myself, to write about songs that come into my life and impact me one way or another. Enjoy.
